November 12, 2004
Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) presented the NYK President's award to company employee Ms. Aki Terai in celebration of her entering into the final of the Air Rifle Prone Shooting event (handicap 1) at the Athens Paralympics in September, and her dramatic come-from-behind effort that secured her a 7th place ranking.
Ms. Terai has been working as a crew member aboard Asuka, a cruiser operated by NYK affiliate NYK Cruises Co., Ltd, since graduating from university. In 1997 while at home, she was suddenly afflicted with lower body paralysis, and since then her motor nerves have never recovered which confined her to a wheelchair.
After rehabilitation, she returned to her position and presently works at the Kansai branch of NYK. While she was undergoing her rehabilitation training, Ms.Terai began practicing air rifle shooting and trained hard during her busy schedule. Thanks to her persistent efforts, she achieved brilliant results.
The company now celebrates with her by bestowing the NYK President's award, and all Company employees will continue to support Ms. Terai. as a valuable colleague.
