NYK Group Conducts Joint Anti-Terrorism Training Exercise with Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore Simulated Attack on NYK's Ship by Unidentified Ship
September 17, 2004
Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and its affiliated ship management company, NYK Shipmanagement (Head Office: Singapore), conducted a joint maritime anti-terrorism training exercise with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on September 16, 2004.
The exercise was undertaken on the assumption that MPA had obtained information about a terrorist plan that an unidentified ship would attack LNG JAMAL (NYK's liquid natural gas carrier, gross tonnage: 112,069 tons), which was anchored off the coast of Singapore. Following the mock alert from MPA, each related party proceeded according to their designated security plans to strengthen emergency liaisons and guard duty systems for LNG JAMAL. In addition, the practical training session included a simulated emergency situation where Police Coast Guard and MPA craft blocked and arrested a suspicious ship which was approaching the LNG JAMAL at high speed.
NYK senior management established an in-house liaison committee in December 2003 as a forum for discussing maritime anti-terrorism policies. To date, NYK has raised the level of security for operations on approximately 500 carriers, including chartered ships, under the initiative of the Crisis Management Team in the Safety and Environmental Management Group (which acts as the secretariat). Due to the continuing instability in Iraq and Russia, the Company planned and implemented this anti-terrorism training exercise as part of its security activities to ensure the safety of ships in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.
NYK continues to cooperate proactively with authorities in relevant countries through similar joint training exercises, and also to increase the level of security in response to threats of all types of maritime terrorism.
Outline of SOLASThe International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) was established in 1914. The latest revision was made on July 1, 2004 to strengthen the security standards for both international ships and vessels, and ports and harbors, due to the increased risk of terrorism and other hazards against them.
