CSR Chamber Inaugurated

April 2, 2004

Various forms of corporate social responsibility, such as corporate governance, environmental protection and compliance with laws and regulations, are now attracting increasingly keen attention. All divisions of NYK have all along engaged in diverse activities to fulfill NYK's social responsibility in various fields. However, NYK has now arrived at the conclusion that these activities need to be integrated so that the NYK Group can fulfill its social responsibility even more systematically. That is why NYK inaugurated the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Chamber on April 1.

From the standpoint that CSR represents the very essence of corporate management, the CSR Chamber has been set up within the Management Coordination Group, which is charged with formulating management guidelines. At the same time, in order to cover all segments of NYK, the CSR Committee, with the CSR Chamber as its secretariat, has also been established on an across-the-board basis.

As for NYK's CSR-related activities from now on, a review will first be undertaken with respect to the specific content of social responsibility for NYK. The scope of NYK's CSR-related activities will be confirmed, while an action program will be drawn up. NYKOs future activities will be based on that program.

At present, NYK has received various inquiries from diverse stakeholders both at home and abroad. Among matters raised by such inquiries are those based on fresh viewpoints and new senses of value. In order to rightly fulfill its accountability for such matters, NYK will push ahead with the disclosure of information both internally and externally and thereby further promote the transparency of management. At the same time, NYK will constantly reexamine the direction in which it should proceed in the years ahead.
