NYK has decided to build two 300,000-DWT double-hull VLCCs (Very Large Crude oil Carriers) as follows:

Earlier, NYK decided to adopt a double-hull fuel tank for a VLCC, scheduled for completion in December 2005, from a viewpoint of protecting the marine environment. This policy also applies to the above-mentioned two newbuildings. Like the previous newbuilding, the width between the outside hull and the inner wall of the fuel tank is 2 meters - the same as is the case with cargo tanks - in order to enhance the effectiveness of the double-hull structure.

NYK's new VLCCs to be built from 2004 now number 11, including the following nine already on order:

NYK has put up the shift of its VLCC fleet to the double-hull structure as one of the targets of its "Environment Action Plan" for the protection of the marine environment. NYK is thus pushing ahead with the construction of double-hull VLCCs in order to have completed the shift of its VLCC fleet to a complete double-hull structure by the end of 2007.

The completion of the above-mentioned VLCCs now on order will boost the number of NYK's double-hull VLCCs to 27 by the end of the first quarter of 2007, accounting for more than 90 percent of NYK's VLCC fleet.
