ISO14001 Certification of NYK's Activities Expanded NYK Builds World's Largest Network of Environmental Protection Activities
June 19, 2003
NYK's 30 key overseas footholds in Europe, North America and Asia, and NYK's affiliate NYK Global Bulk Corporation recently received ISO14001 certification.
Last year, NYK acquired ISO14001 certification for its entire fleet, including chartered vessels, making it the first shipping line in the world to do so. The recent acquisition of the additional ISO14001 certification has now enabled NYK to extend its coordinated environmental protection activities under the "One Policy, One System" policy to overland and water transport in inland areas abroad by such means as trucks, railroads and barges.
The latest expansion of NYK's ISO14001 certification has brought to about 40 the total number of NYK's certified operational hubs around the world, including its head office, branches and container terminals in Japan, which had already received the certification. As such, NYK has established the world's largest network of environmental protection activities as a comprehensive physical distributor centering on maritime transport.
The medium- and long-term management vision NYK21 "Forward 120" for the NYK Group, announced in May this year, adopted the slogan of "Becoming Even More Global, Seeking Even More Onsite Activity." In order to implement this slogan in the sphere of environmental protection, NYK has set up "satellite sites" in London, New York (Secaucus, New Jersey) and Singapore as coordination centers for environmental activities. These centers are charged with undertaking the comprehensive review of environmental activities conducted by offices under their jurisdiction and sending reports on their activities to the Safety and Environmental Management Committee in Tokyo (chaired by NYK President Takao Kusakari).
NYK is well aware that the improvement of day-to-day business activities and the promotion of on-the-spot efforts are of immense importance for activities to ensure safety and environmental protection. Efforts to ensure safety and avoid environmental risks, and measures for the improvement of environmental efficiency are something that should contribute to sustainable development on a global scale without being limited in duration. NYK understands that corporations will henceforth be increasingly called upon to fulfill their social responsibility. The group regards environmental protection activities as a central pillar of its effort to meet this challenge of the new age. NYK is therefore determined to go ahead with steady and sustained activities for environmental protection.
