NYK-Shanghai Maritime University Training Scheme Launched

On a sunny and pleasant morning on October 9th in Shanghai, with smartly turned out Cadets lining the approaches to the main building and the University Band playing inspirational tunes, stage was set for launching NYK's bespoke training scheme of cadet navigators and engineers.

Mr. J. Nemoto, Chairman of NYK Group accompanied by Senior Managing Director Capt. M. Yamamoto and Chairman of NYK ShipManagement Pte Ltd. Capt. T. Manji and other representatives of NYK from Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo were present during this occasion. They were joined by senior officials of the China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO) and the Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) faculty

Professor Gao Deyi welcomed the visitors and addressed the gathering which included the Cadets who have been specially chosen to be the pioneers of this important project. Prof. Gao after touching upon the History of SMU and its enviable reputation as one of the foremost learning institution in China exhorted the Cadets to grab this opportunity the scheme offered to become useful and respected members on board and make the motherland and the institution proud. Of them.

Chairman Nemoto in his address, stressed the importance of maritime commerce for the well being of both China and Japan as their very existence depends on the seas surrounding the mankind. He revealed that he had the opportunity to be on board a sailing vessel which was being used for training. The awesome power of Mother Nature was evident on board the vessel. Furthermore, the cooperation and the willingness of helping ones comrade were of great importance on board the vessel. This experience has prompted NYK to require all new comers to do a spell on board the sailing vessel to inculcate espirit de corps culture in to them.

NYK which has a history of 117 years of operation has made a considered decision to go Global in providing its services. To achieve this goal Chairman Nemoto opined depends very much on four factors. These are Human Resources, Assets, Finance and full utilization of Information Technology, Human sources Chairman Nemoto revealed is the most important one of all the aforesaid factors Hence the schemes such as the one being launched ensures trained man power is available for the future.

The future of shipping industry will have its ups and downs Chairman Nemoto said, but NYK is determined to operate its fleet in a safe, economically efficient and environmentally sensitive manner during thick and thin times.

SMU was specially chosen for this pilot project because of Shanghai's own importance and the out standing faculty in SMU and the facilities. Chairman Nemoto concluded by asking the Cadets to bear in mind the importance of the sea and do their very best.

Deputy General Manager of Human Resources Mr. Fu Xiang Yang informed the audience that COSCO and NYK has had meetings on trade, logistics and manpower. Of this Manpower was an important topic. He considered that the launch of this scheme highlights the cooperation between COSCO Manpower and NYK. He requested that all concerned use this excellent opportunity to make this scheme a resounding success.

On behalf of the Cadets Mr. Xia Ling Jhang expressed their sincere thanks for the opportunity given and promised that the chosen Cadets will do their very best.
