NYK Published an Annual Environmental Report

At NYK, we have just published an annual environmental report, The Earth Is Our Home, the intention of which is to have better communication with our stakeholders and foster their awareness of social responsibility for the environment.

In the report, the following are brought into focus:

1. GRI Guideline
   Reference is often made to Sustainable Reporting Guideline issued by GRI (Global Reporting Initiative).
2. Environmental Management Activity
   More pages are dedicated to environmental management activities for shipping lines.
3. Hands-on and Background Information
   All activities reported are based upon our hands-on experiences, and are supported by background information - readers will understand with ease the environmental aspects of Marine Transportation.

And added, among others, is an account of highlights of our activities - to name a few:

• CO2 emissions from the ships per unit of cargo volume transported have reduced by 32% from 1990;
• Through early adoption of non-TBT paint, 56% of the ships owned by us NYK have already been TBT-free. Additional repainting and newbuildings will bring the TBT-free ratio to 67% within fiscal 2002;
• Down time of the ships has reduced by 48% from 1993;
• Replacement of refrigerated containers/CFC-12 cooling unit with those/HFC-134a unit has progressed - CFC-12 units will disappear by 2004.

We are in the opinion that our environmental preservation activities do not simply mean saving resources but also mean taking social responsibility for the environment and committing ourselves to creating greener society.
