NYK to Place Orders for Four New PCTCs
June 21, 2002
NYK is proud to announce that it has decided to place orders for four 6,400 unit (standard car basis) capacity PCTCs (Pure Car and Truck Carrier), which will be delivered in 2004.
This fleet renewal shall serve to replace aged and small to medium size PCCs that have a limited capacity for high-cars. This renewal program shall provide a series of PCTCs with 100% high-car capacity and a speed up to 20.0 knots. By assigning larger vessels in terms of both total capacity and high-car capacity with high quality features, coupled with the last fleet renewal program which took place in 1998-2000, NYK is aiming to achieve further cost competitiveness and a higher quality of transportation. This decision is in line with "Project - C" which targets higher cost efficiency and a reform of corporate economics.
As to the number of vessels to be newly ordered, NYK's basic policy is to maintain the present fleet capacity based on the 25 year life span of a vessel. Though a decision to order four PCTCs has been made at this time, a further newbuilding program based on this policy shall be studied depending on the future situation of the global vehicle trade.
