NYK Line ISO14001 Certification
April 2, 2002
NYK Line has officially received ISO14001 certificate from Lloyd's Register QA Japan* on April 2, 2002. (Issue Date of the Certificate is March 11, 2002) The certificate was directly handed over to President Takao Kusakari from Mr. Patrick W. H. Gunn, the country manager of LRQA Japan at the certification ceremony held at NYK Headquarters in Tokyo.
Although ISO14001 certification is not very sensational these days even in shipping industry, our challenge towards the certification has been somewhat unique in the world. Its uniqueness can be seen in the scope of our activity shown on the certificate as "mega-logistics/ocean carriage services". This means our environmental activities positively covers all of our shipping services using not only vessels owned by NYK but also using those chartered from the market. We are very proud of our achievement derived from strenuous efforts of our staff, because our research tells that ISO14001 certification for this size of shipping fleet, some 500 vessels, is incomparable in the industry.
Operational experience of NYK NAV9000** since 1998, with the help of partner ship owners/managers, has contributed a lot in incorporating chartered vessels within our environmental management system. We must thank, in this regard, those business partners who have kindly been participating in our safety/environmental initiative.
The ISO14001 certified that our environmental management system functions in such a way that it can be comprehended clearly by most people. Nevertheless, the acquisition of the certificate is by no means the end of our environmental management activity, as we intend to strive rigorously for its continuous improvement. As a global logistics company, we will further challenge in expanding the scope of our environmental activity to overseas offices in an attempt to create a single worldwide environmental management system covering related NYK group corporations.
With the growing demand from the society to fulfill the social responsibility of corporations, here at NYK, we are always ready to honestly disclose the necessary information to our stakeholders. And in addition, we are always happy to listen to any suggestions in view of making a change, even step by step, to the global environment.
