NYK Line Set to Ship New Forms of Cargo
February 8, 2002
NYK Line has signed two new time-charter contracts involving two new vessels and the carriage of two new types/forms of cargo. One of the new vessels will be a 35,000CBM ammonia carrier, and the other will be a 7,500 deadweight liquid coal tar pitch carrier.
Both of these contracts involve newly developed business fields for NYK Line, and these contracts are directly attributable to our continuous business activities, stimulated by our BT21 and Project C in-house campaigns, aimed at becoming active in the present tramper businesses.
Significant technical know-how and a vast amount of experience are indispensable for the carriage of ammonia cooled to -33 degrees Celsius, and liquid coal tar pitch which is always maintained at a temperature of around 200 degrees Celsius. It could be said that these contracts came about because of the fact that we have established such a fine technical reputation in LNG, LPG, and crude oil transport over the years.
- Ammonia Carrier
NYK Line entered into a time-charter contract with the Mitsubishi Corporation for the carriage of ammonia on a newly build vessel.
For the Mitsubishi Corporation, as well as for NYK Line, this is the first contract for an ammonia carrier.
This vessel is expected to be delivered at the end of January 2004 at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, ltd. in Nagasaki. The vessel will carry ammonia from Bontang in Indonesia, where the Mitsubishi Corporation has launched 500,000 MT of new ammonia plants, to South-East Asian countries including India, Thailand, Korea, and Taiwan.
The present sea-born ammonia trade is about 15 million MT per year worldwide and is expected to continue to show gradual growth.

NYK's wholly-own subsidiary, NYK Bulkship (Europe), Ltd. (Head Office - London), entered into a 10-year time-charter contract with BHP Billiton Raw Materials BV, which will utilize a newly built pitch vessel for the transport of liquid coal tar pitch to their Mozambique MOZAL project.
This new liquid coal tar pitch vessel will be built at a shipyard in Japan and is expected to be delivered in April of 2003. This will also be the first time for NYK Line to be involved in the trade of a highly heated cargo such as liquid coal tar pitch.
