NYK will help inaugurate an Internet broking service company called "e-JAN Corporation" on April 25th, 2000.

NYK, together with five other major Japanese shipbroking companies, Matsui & Company, Ltd., Yamamizu Shipping Co., Ltd., Houn Shipping Company, Ltd., Jasbo & Co.,Ltd., and Daido Shipping & Trading Co., Ltd., will start preparation of this new Internet service, the very first shipbroking service for chartering and Sales & Purchase (S&P).

e-JAN (Electrical Joyfully Accessible Network) Corporation will be established with JP¥50MIL share capital, which will be invested by the six above companies, and will be headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

In the routine business of ship chartering, shipbrokers intermediate the negotiation of fixtures between shipowners and charterers. Considering the rapid development of Internet B to B business, the e-JAN site will provide net brokering service for ship chartering and S&P. The e-JAN Corporation certainly hopes that this new site will be extensively utilized by cargo owners and shipowners all over the globe.

We have recently seen several web services involving ship chartering and S&P, however these only provide information about vessel position, cargo details, and S&P requirements. e-JAN Corporation will not only provide information about vessels, cargoes, and S&P, but will offer a web site that allows shipowners and charterers to directly negotiate fixtures. In addition, the e-JAN Corportion will provide optional services for preparing C/Ps, handling calculations, etc., in the same manner as shipbrokers do at present. The e-JAN Corporation believes that negotiation on the Internet will be advantageous by allowing ship chartering and S&P businesses to attain speedy and reasonable solutions by concentrating the information on chartering and S&P into an electronic database.

e-Jan Corporation will be established on April 25th and plans to start its service, the first real shipbroking web site for chartering and S&P in Japan, late in June. Additionally, e-JAN Corporation will launch and add several service functions, such as maritime information services, etc., one by one. The final goal will be a global and vertical maritime web portal.
