Land transportation

Conveyance by Land

Because land transportation happens so close to our daily lives and affects us so directly, this mode demands particularly effective environmental measures. Our company is committed to satisfying customer's total needs by proposing solutions that help to reduce environmental burdens.

Promotion of modal shift (e.g., in inland container-freight service in Europe)

Combating Global WarmingPrevent Air Pollution

The North Continental Office*1 of NYK Group Europe Co. uses a modal shift that switches the inland transportation of containers from trucks to both railways and barges with comparatively low environmental impact, and uses trucks that have low environmental impact.

  1. In February 2008, we started to operate a special railway terminal in Duisburg, Germany, and thereby improved railway convenience.
  2. We promote the introduction of an "Eco-truck" that can efficiently transport three 20-foot containers at once.
  3. When subcontracting trucks, we encourage the use of vehicles that meet European "Euro norm" environmental standards.

We are also working to adopt modal shifts at other locations in the Americas, Asia, Europe, Japan, and elsewhere.

Promotion of modal shift (e.g., rail transport service in India)

Transporting automobiles by rail

NYK AUTO LOGISTICS (INDIA), a subsidiary of the NYK Group in India, integrated its operations with CONYK CARTRAC Pvt. Ltd., a joint venture for the rail transportation of finished cars, in October 2010. The business will make use of a hub and spokes network in which rail transport provides the long-distance portion, with trucks used at the points of origin and destination. Rail transport significantly reduces CO2 emissions per vehicle. With finished car distribution on the increase, we have taken an active role in identifying and implementing environmental solutions and look forward to providing enhanced services in the future.

Promotion of "round transportation of containers" that eliminates needless work

Combating Global WarmingPrevent Air Pollution

Our company allows customers who have both importing and exporting freight to use a "round transportation of containers." After delivery of imports, customers can reuse the empty containers for exports. This efficient system reduces the use of trucks that would otherwise have to both return the empty containers to a terminal and pick up empty containers again for export, thus generating negative environmental impact both ways.

Construction of the most efficient transportation and proposal to customer

Parts used to be supplied to assembly plants from individual parts-makers one by one. Now, however, YUSEN Logistics has built crossing points (cross-docks) and set up a system that dispatches a single truck to collect parts and components from many parts-makers and deliver them together to assembly plants ? such a route is often called a milk run*1. This system enables the just-in-time delivery of parts and components to assembly plants, and features the following environmental benefits:

  1. Greater route efficiency reduces CO2 emissions from trucks.
  2. Reusable cartons*2; greatly reduce paperboard-box consumption and related waste.
  3. Shorter lead times and greater truck-loading efficiency conserve supply-chain energy resources.

We provide a detailed service model that matches a customer's business model and helps to reduce environmental burdens.

*1 A milk run
A "milk run," so called because the route resembles a morning milk delivery, means using one truck to collect multiple parts and deliver them to an assembly line.

*2 Reusable cartons
Reusable cartons are boxes and baskets made of reinforced plastic and metal that can be used repeatedly.

Roller-packer reduces waste-transportation distance

Garbage-Compaction

Combating Global WarmingPrevent Air Pollution

NYK Logistics (Australia) Pty. Ltd. has implemented the use of a roller-packer that in essence is designed to compact waste. There are currently only three such roller-packers in Australia. We cannot completely eliminate waste, but we can minimize it, and the roller-packer significantly compacts waste, nearly three to five times better than previous methods. Previously, a waste bin would contain 80% air and only 20% waste, but efficient waste compaction now saves an estimated 22,500 km of waste transportation per year.
