Technology Development
NYK, always listening to customers' wishes, is devoting great energy to the research and development of transport systems that meet all kinds of customer needs. To conduct such research and development, NYK established the NYK Logistics Technology Institute in June 1997. The institute was subsequently reorganized into the Monohakobi Technology Institute Co. Ltd. (MTI) on April 1, 2004 to further intensify research and development activities. (The Japanese word “Monohakobi” means the carriage of goods.)

MTI is focusing on a wide variety of research and development to improve ship-operating technologies and logistics solutions such as:
- Environmental Conservation and Energy-Saving Technology
- Ship-Operating Technology
- Consultation on Quality Transport
- Logistics Solutions: Utilization of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
- Multi-Cargo Simulations using the Multi-Cargo Simulator (MCS*) located at MTI's Yokohama Laboratory: Testing for Shock and Vibration during Transportation; Testing for Shock and Vibration Resistance of Transport Machinery; and Testing for Earthquake Resistance
- Environmental Conservation and Energy-Saving Technologies
Aiming to reduce CO2 emissions, which are a leading cause of global warming, and mitigate NOx and SOx emissions, MTI is developing new technological solutions for environmental and energy issues: energy-saving hull-form designs, energy-saving engine systems (hybrid propulsion and exhaust-heat recovery), various other energy-saving devices, clean energy technology (solar photovoltaic power generators and wind power devices), and a ballast-water management system. - Ship-Operating Technology
In pursuit of safe, efficient ship operation and cargo handling, MTI is engaged in various R&D projects including a mobile ladder and related devices used to safely check cargo holds of bulkers, a container lashing method employing new materials, and twist-lock systems.
MTI is also actively designing an onshore operational-support system that monitors vessel speeds and the fuel consumption of vessels in operation. - Consultation for Higher-Quality Transport
Based on know-how accumulated over the years and its experience in investigating and eliminating the causes of cargo damage that occurs in transit, MTI offers solution for preventing such damage. This includes measuring and collecting vibration and temperature/humidity data within containers, and creating software that allows for container temperature/humidity simulations. With its extensive knowledge and competencies, MTI globally provides wide-ranging consultation.
In addition, MTI markets products that prevent cargo damage, including Condensation Terminator Sheets (CT Sheets) and Shock-Absorbing Pallets. - Logistics Solutions (Utilization of RFID)
The IC tag is an automatic object-identification tool that allows excellent reading speed, communication over distances, data-handling capacity, and the tracking and tracing of individual items throughout supply chains. IC tags are widely used in the field of logistics. Since 2004, MTI has been providing IC tags, related systems, and consulting services to customers worldwide. Recent MTI records show that the company has procured and delivered more than 1.5 million IC tags.
IC tag usage is contributing greatly to the traceability of goods and the efficiency of logistics systems. MTI will work constantly to develop proposals and technical innovations that help improve the quality of our customers' logistics operations.
In the logistics industry, where the effects of globalization are often magnified, setting standards for IC tag utilization is a pressing matter. MTI is actively involved in drafting standards for IC tag utilization at EPCglobal, an international standards group. -
Multi-Cargo Simulations using MCS* at Yokohama Laboratory: Testing for Shock and Vibration during Transportation, Testing for Shock and Vibration Resistance of Transport Machinery, and Testing for Earthquake-Resistance
MTI performs various vibration tests employing a large tri-axial shaking table, and carries out temperature/humidity tests in an atmospheric environment room.
The tri-axial shaking table can precisely reproduce vibrations, impacts, and oscillations that cargo in transit may encounter. The table can also reproduce seismic motions similar to those experienced in the devastating earthquake that hit southern Hyogo Prefecture. These accurate and reliable data are used to verify optimal packing and stowing methods for cargo. Recently, MTI has also been performing a vibration test for IBC containers used to store dangerous liquids.
The atmospheric environment room, which can reproduce temperatures ranging from –15°C to 80°C, is used in simulations that test and assess thermal resistance of products and cargo containers in transit.
