Liner Trade Business

8600 teu container ship

Delivering tailored services using one of the world's largest marine transport networks

A variety of goods that are essential to our daily lives—including food, electrical appliances, and the like—are transported via container vessels.

The liner trade business comprises the container transport division and the conventional cargo transport division.

The financial crisis that arose last year has affected the global flow of goods, but over the medium to long term, increasing economic development in the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) and the expansion of the global population should cause the flow of goods to increase. In order to be in the best position to respond to the future demand for container transport, NYK will proceed with the building of about 20 vessels to add to the fleet of about 110 container vessels the company currently has in operation.

NYK is making efforts not only to expand its fleet but also to construct the largest service-route network in the world. The Grand Alliance (GA), an organization established by NYK, Hapag-Lloyd Container Line Gmbh (Germany), and Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (Hong Kong), currently offers joint-operation services using about 130 container vessels. Furthermore, GA expands its network with container lines and alliances outside the GA.

Utilizing this large-scale transportation network, the NYK Group will continue to expand its shipping capacity, number of operation services, and number of calling ports in order to further increase the comprehensive strength of the NYK Group.
